Yu Seafood, located at 3401 Dufferin St. (a.k.a. Yorkdale Shopping Centre), received 17 infractions on Oct. 6 — five crucial, eight significant, and four minor ones, according to Toronto Public Health.

While it has two locations — one in Richmond Hill, the other in Yorkdale — it’s the one in the mall that was given a conditional pass notice, though it remains open to the public.

Yu Seafood prides itself on its “sophisticated and contemporary” take on Chinese cuisine, specializing in Cantonese and Sichuan as well as its Peking duck and dim sum dishes.

Yu’s five crucial infractions are failing to ensure food handlers wash hands as necessary to prevent contamination of food, not ensuring the restaurant’s storage racks were designed to protect against contamination, and failing to protect food from contamination or adulteration.

Health inspectors also noted it did not store potentially hazardous foods at internal temperatures between 4C and 60C, nor was ice stored in a sanitary manner.

As for the eight significant infractions, hand-washing stations were not conveniently accessible by those handling food, and the stations were not maintained with soap and paper towels.

Yu also was using food equipment not of sound and tight construction, the equipment was not free from cracks in contact with food, the mechanical equipment was not maintained to provide the sufficient chemical rinse, and it failed to provide a thermometer in the refrigeration equipment.

Also, the utensils were not of “readily cleanable form,” and a dirty towel was used for cleaning food contact surfaces.

The restaurant’s four minor violations all pertained to the food-handling room: the room itself was not maintained in sanitary condition, the floors and ceiling were not maintained in a clean manner, and the space contained equipment not regularly used.
