Knox Brew Hub owner expands business with beer keg service to offices

Office culture is changing, and just as piercings and tattoos are becoming more acceptable in the workplace, drinking beer is no longer a total taboo.

Now, coworkers can sip and socialize in their Knoxville offices thanks to a new rental and leasing service for kegerators, refrigeration devices that keep kegged beer cold and can easily be set up in a break room or at a poolside party.

The brains behind this beer-drinking business is none other than Zack Roskop, perhaps the biggest proponent for sharing craft beer culture in Knoxville. He's the founder of Knox Brew Tours, the owner of Knox Brew Hub and the former president of the Knoxville Area Brewers Association (and he doesn't even own a brewery).

Before embarking on this endeavor, Roskop polled friends who have offices around town to see if they had ever considered beer in the workplace. While some had toyed with the idea, no one wanted to buy a system to maintain or pay someone to pick up beer.

"I started thinking about how there's a lot of offices downtown, and there's a lot of businesses that want to be competitive when it comes to young talent," Roskop said. "One trend that you're seeing in bigger cities is offices that will close at 4 on Friday and have a staff happy hour, or they'll have beer in the office because beer is coming more acceptable."

To totally understand what a kegerator is, Roskop said, it's important to understand what it's not.

Clear your mind of hand-pumped beer and upside-down keg stands. Kegerators are more professional, built to store beer and keep it cold – no melted ice, no garbage cans (you remember your college days, right?).

Rather than using "ambient air," Roskop said, kegerators hold a CO2 tank and have room for a towering tap system on top – just like the tap handles you see at bars.

"It just plugs in," he said. "So, you've got fresh, crisp, non-spoiling, cold beer forever until that keg is blown. ... And you can rent it for your party. We'll drop it off, and then eight hours later we'll pick it up. Maybe you're renting a cabin in Gatlinburg for a whole weekend – we'll drop it off on Friday, we'll pick it up on Sunday."

These scenarios represent the renting side of the business, which will set up the kegerator for customers on a short-term basis. Then there's the leasing side, which operates monthly and is the ideal option for bosses looking to make kegged beer part of company culture.

For between roughly $89 and $129 per month (Roskop is still working out prices), businesses can rent a kegerator for the office. That price includes free keg delivery, and Roskop will clean beer lines every time he delivers.

"I'll tell you the three office spaces that I've spoken to so far that are heavily yeses – one is an architecture firm, one is a marketing firm and one is a media company," Roskop said. "All creative types. I don't see an accounting firm being as interested in a kegerator, but I could be wrong."

Of course, companies also will have to purchase kegs of beer through Roskop, who will push for selecting products that are locally brewed. Leasing a kegerator also calls for a refundable deposit and an initial setup fee.

"We are obsessed with, in love with and totally sold out on local beer," he said. "But above that, we are sold out on making it available to everyone in every environment and serving it to them in the most quality way possible. ... And we want to use the technology that exists to do that."

Roskop is exploring avenues to restock office refrigerators with beer, as employees might want to offer an outside-the-box beverage to clients when they visit. He also is looking into delivering cases of beer to tailgates on University of Tennessee football game days.

"I mean, it's like the freakin' Santa Claus of beer," he said.

These ideas still are in the works but, as for the tailgates, kegerators always are an option as long as there's power access.

Kegerators can allow two sixtel kegs to be tapped at the same time. Those kegs can have the same beer to ensure there's always a backup or different flavors for more variety.

All of these options are available thanks to the state loosening alcohol laws in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previously, beer could not be delivered directly to a consumer.

"My dream and my hope would be I'd love to have 10, 12, 15 offices downtown that are all leasing kegerators from us – that are all buying these kegs from us, which we already have the infrastructure for," Roskop said. "One of the things that I love about beer is that it is humble, but it's not simple.

"But it's that humbleness, that blue-collarness that sort of makes it ... less threatening in a professional setting. It's lower alcohol percentage, and it's become a part of our everyday culture."

Roskop currently has a handful of kegerators and plans to spend the next few weeks working out the kinks with one client before fully launching the business.
