Donation will help soup kitchen with new walk

Oct 13, 2023

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A local soup kitchen has received a donation that will help it better serve the community.

Monday, Guys Who Give of Vigo County donated $5,900 to the soup kitchen at St. Benedict Church in Terre Haute. The money will be used to install a new walk-in freezer.

With the soup kitchen serving upwards of 150 people a day, the walk-in freezer will offer more space to store food to feed them.

"They've been there 26 years. Sometime, in May or June, they will have served their one-millionth meal," said Terry Hogan, who is a member of Guys Who Give, as well as husband to a leader at the soup kitchen.

A fire happened at the kitchen early last week, causing the power to be cut at the building. The building reopened to serve the community Monday afternoon. Volunteers say several people showed up for lunch.
